Lantern Festival is one of China’s traditional festivals. According to Chinese customs, it is the last festive day in the celebration of the ongoing Spring Festival. The festival usually means reunion, happiness, brightness and hope for Chinese people. With a long development history, Lantern Festival is on the fifteenth day of the first month on Chinese lunar calendar. Lantern Festival in 2025 falls on February 12.
In June 2008, Lantern Festival was inscribed on the Second Batch of National Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
On the day, people in northern China would like to eat Yuanxiao, while people in southern China prefer Tangyuan. Yuanxiao and Tangyuan are both some kinds of sweet glutinous rice balls, but different in the way of making.
There are a wide variety of festivities, like lantern riddle guessing, firework show, loong lantern dance, stilt walking show, etc.
